#SocialMediaDown
What a wake up call!
Anyone else felt a weird mix of relief and confusion last Monday? Just me?
Instagram , Facebook, WhatsApp all down!!
I didn’t even realise that it was all down until someone I was hanging out with did a little research after a bit of frustration from not being able to communicate with anyone on WhatsApp. But the moment I found out, I had this weird sense of wanting to be able to connect and see what others were up to, to have that instant entertainment, along with the sense of relief that I was forced to connect and not think about what I should be posting and sharing about my business. It was this moment of fresh air to my lungs, mind and heart, not having to think about what other people are doing, what I am doing, whether I am doing enough for my business, etc.
This event made me realise two things:
On a personal and relational level, the importance on disconnecting and reconnecting with others, being present in the conversation, giving our loved ones our focus and attention, rather than allowing social media to distract us and occupy our minds. Monday night I spent the evening playing boards games and chatting until late in to the night, being fully present in the moment. Rather than my typical evening of watching tele, while scrolling through all the social media platforms, being half present in the real world and half present in the virtual world - having half hearted conversations in both spaces. A real wake up call.
Have you thought of hiring a photographer to capture you spending time with your loved ones so you can focus on your family and friends? This could be a party, a more chilled lifestyle vibe, make memories and capture them for a lifetime!
The other realisation I had was in relation to business and the online space we own as business owners. Something I learned early on in starting my business, was the power of a mailing list and the fact that it is the only online space you completely own yourself. This lesson came rushing back in this moment of realising my disconnection from my social media platforms. Even though I knew this fact early on, I have put it off for an embarrassingly long time… What if instagram or Facebook completely disappeared from the online space, what would happen to your business? How would people hear about you and your business? For me, word of mouth and my website would be biggest forms of marketing… but there is a better way. MAILING LIST! A NEWSLETTER!
So that is what I am going to do! I am starting a monthly (hopefully) newsletter, to keep you updated on the latest happenings and offerings I have in store. Teaching you little photography tips, along with what my clients have to say! If you want to join me in this journey, and receive a fun little email every so often sign up below!
