1.

Check out their portfolio. Whether its their website or instagram, have look and see if you like their style. Think about what it is you like about the photos, and whether you think it could align with your personal branding needs. This is the most important tip, if you hired them and didn’t like their style, it is unlikely you would like your final images… Make sure you like what they are offering.

2.

Check out their reviews and references. What have others said about their experience with that photographer? Are they good things, or are there even any reviews? And what do they say about themselves to their online audience?

3.

Photography is an investment, any investment worth while isn’t cheap. If the price seems too cheap then it could be a red flag to the quality of the photos and quality of the experience. Have a chat with the photographer about their pricing, and ask them what they do in preparation and post shoot. This will help you understand more of the amount of energy and effort which goes into each photography job.

4.

Get in touch. Have a phone call or video call. How do they make you feel about getting your photo taken? Anxious, Excited, Nervous? Do they make you feel comfortable and excited about getting photographs taken of you? If not, then maybe they are not the one for you.

5.

Are they interested in you and your needs? Take note of whether they are asking questions about you, your brand, are they trying to get to know you more? This is important for them to gain understanding about your business/brand and you, if they don’t do this they may not be able to truly capture you and your brand values to visually represent you authentically. Which isn’t really what you want, you want someone who wants to serve you in the best way they can and that includes gaining knowledge about you, their potential client.
